Can I Migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify Without Losing SEO?

Yes. As long as you preserve your URL structure (or correctly redirect it with 301s), carry over your meta titles and descriptions, and make sure your product, category, and blog pages resolve to their new Shopify URLs, moving from WooCommerce to Shopify doesn't have to cost you search traffic. WooCommerce Importer creates these redirects automatically during the import.

What actually causes SEO loss during a platform switch

Most ranking loss during a CMS migration isn’t caused by Shopify itself — it’s caused by a sloppy migration:

  • Broken URLs — WooCommerce URLs that 404 after launch because no redirect was set up
  • Lost meta data — titles and descriptions that don’t carry over and get replaced by Shopify’s defaults
  • Missing images — product photos that don’t migrate, killing Google Images traffic
  • Canonical conflicts — duplicate content between the old and new site during the transition period
  • Slow indexing — Google not picking up the new structure fast enough after launch

None of these are inherent to Shopify — they’re all avoidable with a properly prepared migration.

How Store Importer protects your SEO

  • Automatic 301 redirects from your old WooCommerce URLs to their Shopify equivalent, for products, categories, and (optionally) blog posts
  • Meta titles and descriptions carried over from your WooCommerce or Yoast/RankMath data
  • Images are downloaded and rehosted by us — including images embedded in product descriptions — so you don’t end up with broken external image links on your own domain
  • Content stays intact — descriptions, categories, and variant structure come across as-is, so you don’t end up with thin or duplicate pages

What’s still on you

WooCommerce Importer handles the technical side of the migration, but a few things fall outside the import itself:

  • Blog content and standalone landing pages outside the standard WooCommerce product structure need to be moved or rewritten manually
  • Backlinks — external links keep working as long as the redirect is live, but it’s worth notifying your main link sources of the new URLs
  • Google Search Console — reconnect it to your Shopify domain and submit a new sitemap
  • Expect a temporary dip — a short ranking fluctuation during the transition is normal even with correct redirects; it typically recovers within a few weeks

Does preserving SEO cost extra?

No. Redirects, meta data, and image migration are part of the same one-time migration price as your products, customers, and orders — there’s no separate charge.
